Birth is a powerful moment in a woman’s life. It is easy for her to feel lost in the excitement of a new baby, but nurture and support during labor is of vital importance! Labor is filed with a wide range of emotions as well as physical sensations. A woman remembers her labor vividly and providing her with supportive care fosters confidence, belief, positivity, and comfort all which provide a wonderful birth day!
Science has shown that continuous support from a designated support person, who is not from the laboring mother’s social group, and is experienced in providing support has a positive influence on birth outcomes. Spontaneous birth without intervention or cesarean, shorter labors, and a satisfying birth experience are among the benefits of having a doula present.
Support from a doula can look like many things! Doula’s can help you navigate the new world you are entering by answering any questions you have, including ones that seem “silly”! They can validate and understand the wide variety of feelings and sensations you are experiencing during the prenatal, birth, and postpartum periods. They help foster comfort during labor with various tools like massage, counter pressure, water, encouragement, reassurance, and optimism! They can also provide help with adjusting positions during labor that facilitate correct baby positioning and help keep labor progressing. Plans can also change and things come up and doula’s are great at seeing the bigger picture and helping you to adjust to what baby is telling us!
How do you know if a doula is going to be a good fit for you? Conversation should be easy! Have a phone consultation and get to know each other. You should feel a connection and conversation should flow easily. Make sure to ask plenty of questions to see if they can provide you with the care and support you are looking for. A doula should never make you feel bad about your choices, if they do then you might not be a great fit and that’s ok! You should feel relaxed and comfortable with your doula and know that you can trust them to support you in the way you need!
